I LOVE REI
I love Refugee Empowerment International, REI. And that is why I joined their Board of Directors 5 years ago.
What makes REI different?
We are a fundraising and awareness-raising organisation that focusses projects that we have been funding for many years. We have a long-term commitment to these projects, places that can often be forgotten, in the newest refugee and displacement crises. We remain committed to these forgotten refugees, many of whom have grown up on camps, most of whom want to go home, yet can’t.
The projects are self-managed and we at REI, provide resources. We visit the projects, but not as advisors, teachers or experts, but to be present and receive information from the project managers as best how to meet the needs of the communities there, to learn the impact that the resources we provide are having and to maintain the human connection.
We always take our lead from the people who are on the ground. And the people on the ground are always the leaders who live on the camps from the displaced community.
Gifting season is here!
There are ways to gift to your loved ones in a zero-waste fashion by donating to REI for a relative (I did it for an Aunt who requested no more flowers or wreaths)
Currently, it is “Giving December” which is an international movement that encourages people to donate to nonprofits of their choice. With each new conflict, old conflicts and the people forced into long-term displacement are often forgotten. REI continues to support people who continue to live as evacuees today in places that don't get the attention of the world. Please choose REI as your donation destination this Giving December. REI's donations go directly to projects, so your donations have a greater impact on empowering displaced people.
December is here and as we rush to buy gifts for our loved ones this holiday season, let's not forget that a small amount goes a long way in empowering refugees like Seh Mya, a bright student at the Karenni Social Development Center. Learn more.
